Do you know who your customers are?

I had a call a few weeks back with a company interested in all sorts of things. I asked about their tech stack and they had this over here and that over there, so I asked, do you know who your customers are? One person said yes, they're in this system. The person on the customer success side said no, that's not true, our customers are here and they're updated over there. So, no, we don't know who our customers are. It could be a combination of deals that closed, or what's sitting in the accounting system, what was invoiced to whom, but that still doesn't tell you who is current. If you've got a software product, who's logging in, or who maybe stopped paying their invoices? The definition of customer: is it black and white?
