Hubsessed Office Hours: Reporting and Dashboards
When the numbers do not look right
Joshua Oakes · Wednesday, October 14, 2026
I feel like it happens every week: an exec says, the numbers don't look right. I want that to land with me, because it's an opportunity. Cultivate your stakeholder relationships so that anytime somebody says it, they bring it to you. Then you get to ask whether it's a big change week over week, or a terms question. Getting ten of those questions a week can be overwhelming, especially in the early days, but those inquiries are how you solve these problems for an organization. Reports that people's eyes float right over are a symptom of something bigger: we aren't serving stakeholders with what matters to them, or they don't trust the system or the data. I like glanceable reports for execs on critical leading indicators, because a stakeholder doesn't need all the statistical variance. They need a whoa, that number is really wrong sort of immune system trigger. Then you investigate, and push on I don't trust what I'm seeing, because that's where you pull up the carpet on these issues. When did someone last tell you a number looked wrong?
