Intent, Breakdown, Timescale: naming saved reports
Joshua Oakes · Thursday, October 8, 2026
My general naming convention for saved reports: intent, breakdown, timescale, separated by hyphens. Intent is usually what the consumer of the report is going to call it. The business definition. I will push some of the RevOps and admin definitions a little closer to them with these requests. If they really mean people, not a lifecycle stage or an object, we need a term that divorces it from an object. Or we name it the object: deals about to close this month. Roughly, in business terms, what are we trying to show? Breakdown is the dimensions the report is intending to show. By week, by source, one value versus another, like organic versus paid. If the business wants a report under one name, we don't want four reports that are all just that name. We want it by source, by geo, by rep, week over week. Timescale is if there is a time dimension, and I put it on the end with an abbreviation. LW for last week, TY for this year, TM for this month, T90 for trailing 90 days. What would your most used report be called under this pattern? Replay clip from Hubsessed Office Hours: Reporting and Dashboards. Madelyn Donovan and I hosted as equals.
